The word "dyed" in the ribbon industry means three structurally different processes, and most brand buyers do not realize they are negotiating over which one. Specifying the wrong process for the wrong application is the #1 cause of color disappointment at delivery.
Yarn is dyed BEFORE weaving. Each individual yarn skein is immersed in a reactive-dye bath, washed, dried, and then warped onto the loom. When woven, every fiber carries pigment to its core. Colorfastness ratings routinely hit ISO 105-B02 grade 4-5 to 5 because the dye is chemically bonded to the cellulose molecule, not just sitting on the surface.

The single most common procurement mistake is sending a factory a Pantone TPX code and a single visual reference image. A Chinese OEM mill needs four contractual artifacts to deliver color you can sign off:

Color appearance changes dramatically by fiber. The same Pantone 18-1664 on polyester satin looks brighter and more saturated than on cotton twill. Always tie the Pantone reference to the substrate — e.g., "Pantone 18-1664 TPX on 100% polyester double-face satin, 25mm width."
Specify D65 (daylight, 6504K) as primary illuminant with optional A (incandescent, 2856K) and D50 (print viewing, 5003K) cross-checks. Premium brand QC programs often require color matching under all three illuminants because retail displays mix daylight, LED, and halogen sources.
This is where most brand specs fail. Visual approval is subjective and unenforceable. Contractual specs must cite Delta-E measured on a calibrated spectrophotometer (Datacolor 700, X-Rite Ci7800, or equivalent). See section 3 for tolerance bands.

For yarn-dyed bands with woven stripes or jacquard, specify per-component Delta-E (each yarn color measured individually against its Pantone reference) rather than average Delta-E across the full ribbon face.
First-round lab-dip approval rates from reputable BSCI-audited Chinese mills run 55-70%. Revision rates of 30-45% are normal. Build at least 2 revision rounds into your procurement timeline before bulk production starts:
Brands that try to skip revisions ("just send a perfect lab dip first time") either pay 30-50% express surcharges or — more commonly — end up with bulk production that does not match the originally approved lab dip because the mill optimized for what they THOUGHT the brand wanted.
Lightfastness is the second most common post-delivery color failure (after Delta-E drift), and it is rarely specified in brand POs. Ribbon stored on retail shelves, in window displays, or shipped through sun-exposed distribution centers can lose visible color within 4-12 weeks if lightfastness is below grade 4.
ISO 105-B02 tests color change after controlled xenon-arc exposure (simulating accelerated daylight). Standard test duration is 20-40 hours. Rating scale:
Request the mill's most recent ISO 105-B02 test report (issued by SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas, or equivalent third-party lab) for the specific fiber + dye combination you are ordering. Mill self-reported lightfastness claims without third-party verification are marketing copy, not contractual evidence.
