ASTM D6400 and EN 13432 do not certify home compostability. A ribbon that passes ASTM D6400 will not necessarily decompose in a backyard compost pile — it needs industrial composting infrastructure. 4. Common Procurement Pitfalls
Pitfall 1: ASTM D6400 Claimed as "Biodegradable" Without Context
Issue: A ribbon passes ASTM D6400 (industrial compostable), but the marketing claim is "biodegradable" or "eco-friendly" without specifying industrial composting requirements. Consumers may discard the ribbon in regular waste or backyard compost, where it will not decompose as expected.
Fix: Specify the exact standard on the product label and marketing materials. Do not use generic "biodegradable" without naming the certification body and conditions.
Pitfall 2: PLA Ribbon Used in High-Heat or High-Humidity Applications
Issue: PLA ribbon begins degrading at 55–60°C. Storage in hot warehouses, shipping in non-climate-controlled containers, or use in tropical climates can cause shrinkage, brittleness, or premature degradation.
Fix: Specify storage conditions (15–25°C, < 60% relative humidity) and avoid PLA for outdoor, automotive, or tropical-market applications. Use cellulose or organic cotton for these use cases.
Pitfall 3: "Bio-Based" Claimed as "Compostable"
Issue: A ribbon is bio-based (e.g., partially made from sugarcane) but is not certified compostable. Bio-based ≠ compostable. A bio-based PET ribbon behaves like conventional PET and persists in the environment for decades.
Fix: Require a compostability certificate (ASTM D6400, EN 13432, TÜV OK Compost HOME, or BPI) for any compostability claim. Bio-based claims alone do not justify a "compostable" label.
Pitfall 4: Greenwashing Documentation Gaps
Issue: The ribbon has a certificate, but the certificate is for the yarn, not the finished ribbon (e.g., not the printed, dyed, or coated version). The finishing process may have introduced non-compostable additives.
